Tavernier / Plantation Key Real Estate

Tavernier is a bucolic community just south of Key Largo in the Florida Keys. It is an hour and a half drive from Miami’s frenetic lifestyle to the north and an hour away from Key West to the south. Tavernier real estate properties are typically waterfront with great views of Florida Bay or the Atlantic Ocean. The Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center is located in Tavernier.

Plantation Key is adjacent to Tavernier. It was formerly designated as a populated place by the Census Bureau but has since been incorporated as part of the Village of Islamorada in 1977. Tavernier and Plantation Key are part of upper Florida Keys. Both places are accessed by the Overseas Highway also known as U.S. Highway 1 that runs the length of the Keys all the way to the southernmost tip of the U.S in Key West.

Most of the Keys in Monroe County are not known for large land development projects because buildable land is very limited. Building and zoning regulations are very restrictive in order to preserve the natural habitats of key deer, manatee and other endangered species found in the area. Other development issues such as access to potable water and sewage management have also restricted development, thus the limited supply of available Plantation Key real estate.

The Monroe County School District operates one public school for elementary and the middle grades in Tavernier and Plantation Key. There is one high school serving Tavernier students located in Plantation Key. Families also have the option of sending their children to the private and charter schools in Key Largo and Islamorada.

Plantation Key real estate properties are typically in waterfront communities. Single-family homes and multi-family dwellings in gated condominium and townhouse developments are available.

Property owners and vacationers who prefer peace and quiet without sacrificing access to fishing, dive sites and other recreation opt for Tavernier real estate or Plantation Key properties.
